With 18 microprocessor controlled machines, equipped with automatic material drying, blending, conveying and loading systems.

Bay-Sports Mfg. Inc. produced during the year 2018 more than 60 million parts 9 million items. PP, ABS, PC and SAN were the plastic resins mainly used.

These machines have the following sizes:

1 machine     88 tons clamping force

2 machines 128 tons clamping force

7 machines 168 tons clamping force

6 machines 218 tons clamping force

2 vertical machines with 70 tons clamping force, which are used mainly for overmolding.

Plastic parts from less than 1 g up to 350 g unit weight can be injected.

Plastic injection molding technology:

Injection molding is the most common method of producing parts out of plastic material. It is an extremely versatile process that is capable of producing parts with a wide range of attributes. Melted granular plastic is fed by gravity from a hopper dryer into a heated barrel. As the granulates are slowly moved forward by a screw-type plunger, the plastic is forced into a heated chamber, where it is melted. As the plunger advances, the melted plastic is forced through a nozzle that rests against the mold, allowing it to enter the mold cavity through a gate runner system. The mold remains cold so that the plastic solidifies almost as soon as the mold is filled. Once the part is sufficiently cool, the mold opens and the part is ejected.

Some informations about plastics:

The word plastic is derived from the Greek plastikos meaning capable of being shaped or molded. Plastic has become increasingly important in our every day lives. 18.000 different types and more than 100 Million tons of plastic are actually produced per year, so that a broad range of consumer needs can be covered. For the most part, plastics are organic high polymers. The raw materials needed come mainly from petroleum and natural gas.

Environmental issues:

Plastics are durable and degrade very slowly. Since 1950 one billion tons of plastic have been discarded and may persist for hundreds and even thousands of years. In some cases burning plastic can release toxic fumes. Burning the plastic polyvinyl chloride (PVC) may create dioxin. Before the ban of CFCs the production of polystyrene contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer. Since 1995 plastic recycling programs were common in many countries. Thermoplastics can be remelted and reused, and thermoset plastics can be ground up and used as filler. There are methods by which plastics can be broken back down to a feedstock state. Plastic can be converted as a fuel. Plastic is made from crude oil, so it can be broken down to liquid hydrocarbon. One kilogram of waste plastic produces a liter of hydrocarbon.

Over molding technic:

1. Specially designed molds allow previously molded parts to be reinserted in a second mold to allow a new plastic layer to form around the first part.

2. 2-shot or multi-shot molds are designed to over mold within a single molding cycle and must be processed on specialized injection molding machines with two or more injection units. This process is actually an injection process performed twice. In the first step, the base color material is molded into a basic shape. Then the second material of different
color is injected into the remaining open cavities.

Without such over molding procedure many of the products we take for granted today would not exist.
